While divorce can be difficult under any circumstances, it can be even more of a challenge for people in the military. This is especially true when you’re deployed, which can make it tough to remain connected to your kids. Parents offers the following advice in this case, which will help you bond with your kids no matter where you are.

Have a means of communication

Fortunately, there are numerous methods of communication you can use to speak with your kids when you’re away. A laptop is your best friend in this case, as it will allow you to have video conference calls with your family. If you don’t have access to a laptop, you can use your smartphone to do the same. Your children will be reassured by seeing your face and it will allow you to stay a little more plugged in to your brood.

Leave personal mementos behind

You can also leave tangible physical reminders behind for your kids when they’re missing you. For instance, you can record yourself reading your child’s favorite bedtime story so he or she can listen to it whenever. You can also leave them with an item of clothing or other personal affect, which will allow you children to feel a deeper connection. These items can also be used during bedtime routines, when kids are bound to lament your presence even more.

Try to work with your ex

While it can be difficult to work with a former spouse, doing so will offer the greatest benefit to your kids. Communication is key in this case and you should try to reach out to your ex as much as possible regarding child-rearing decisions, academic issues, and other topics regarding your kids. If there is still conflict between you and your spouse, utilize text and email to keep arguments to a minimum.
